Founded in 1892, repeat Best Value School Designee William Carey University has recently taken giant steps to identify certain needs in higher education and quickly address them with new programs. In 2010, the College of Osteopathic Medicine was formed and the first class of Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) graduated in 2014. The university also has doctoral programs in several other areas, including nursing and education. Undergraduates comprise about sixty percent of enrollment, and many are in the school’s popular night program.
While our researchers and reviewers pay close attention to net cost and student comments we were pleasantly surprised to learn – in a conversation with the president of the school – about the unique scholarship and assistance programs available to enrollees. For instance, there are special assistance programs for low income families, and students with excellent academic records may qualify for full tuition and fees plus a room allowance. These exceptional programs are a big reason the enrollment increased almost fifty percent over the last five years.
William Carey University is a Christian institution, is racially mixed, and most students appreciate the campus atmosphere. The school’s retention and graduation rates indicate students are comfortable with this ambiance. Our opinion is that this institution should be high on the lists of prospective students, especially those who will feel comfortable with a school that embraces the best of Old Southern Traditions and couples them with superior academics.
