University of the West

Rosemead, California

4-year, Regionally accredited

Degrees: Bachelor's, Master's

Located in suburban Los Angeles, this unique institution was founded on Buddhist thought and tradition, making for a thought-provoking educational experience.  This diverse school has a student population that is described as more than fifty percent international.  One-third of students attend part time and about 15% are ages 25 and older.  Their stated mission, paraphrased, is to provide a whole-person education informed by Buddhist wisdom and values.  This approach is intended to foster cultural understanding between East and West.

University of the West is regionally accredited and has an open enrollment policy, which is non-restrictive.  The small student body consists of less than 400 enrollees, and the tuition is less than $13k per year.  Popular undergraduate study programs include business, English, and psychology, plus they offer an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Graduate programs include business, psychology, Buddhist chaplaincy, and religious studies.

The vast majority of student comments we uncovered showed a love for the school, its small community of students, and an appreciation for its academic offerings.  We suggest open-minded prospective enrollees take a look at this unique Southern California academic institution.

What our Students are Saying...

"I finished my BA at UWest. I had a great time studying here. I met people from all over the world, monastics and civilians. Wonderful, interested and interesting people from students to staff to faculty. The cost per semester hour is very reasonable and the class sizes are very small."

"A small, caring community right in the middle of the big city. I got my MDiv here in 2013 and my education and experience was top notch - very different from the big, public university I went to before. UWest is now my family."

"Everyone is very helpful and welcoming. Culture diversity is valued and honored. Excellent parking, variety of clubs, reasonable tuition fees, classroom population is small, and they have well-qualified professors."
