One of 52 colleges, universities and seminaries worldwide affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University is located in northern central Ohio and is home to 2,245 students, 1,831 of which are undergraduates. Ohio residents make up 92% of the student body. Almost 37% of the students are 25 or older; 96% of the undergraduates study fulltime as do 52% of the graduate students. Undergraduates study predominantly in a classroom environment, but 60% of grad students take courses online. Note: Mount Vernon’s admissions department informed us that, of their current graduate students, 37% went through the complete enrollment process online. We like this as it makes the enrollment process less daunting.
When we examined Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s nomination we looked closely at net cost to attend (a bit over $19,000 after grants and scholarships provided directly by the institution), academic programs, mission, and then, when we were satisfied MVNU might qualify as a Best Value School, we scoured the Internet for student and alumni comments. We were very pleased to find that this university enjoyed a high percentage of positive comments, placing it in the top tier of colleges and universities we were examining for our 2017 Best Value School Awards.
MVNU, along with some international academic travel options to countries including Egypt, Greece, Israel, Italy and Switzerland, offers a wide selection of quality academic programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. The most popular program offers associate, bachelor or master degrees in business. There are also bachelor and master degrees offered in education, philosophy/religious studies, and health professions, including a BSN (nursing). And bachelor degree programs in social work, biology and visual/performing arts, among others, provide prospective students with a wide range of choices. We noted that the various degree programs follow MVNU’s mission to “Connect the classroom to the real world.” We think more institutions of higher learning should follow that philosophy.
