Located in Lakeland, Florida Southern College is situated on what one independent review service called “the nation’s most beautiful campus” in 2010. Although some other colleges may dispute that designation, the campus itself is in fact mentioned in a positive manner by many student online reviews. Florida Southern’s setting is situated among the many lakes and, of course, enjoys great Florida sunshine. Campus beauty aside, we were at first concerned about the school’s high sticker price of $46,000 which would disqualify Florida Southern, in our opinion, as a Best Value. But we dug further and found that few if any students actually pay “list price”; 98% receive institutional grants or scholarships that reduce the cost to attend (for first year fulltime students) to a far more reasonable $24,600. That’s still a bit rich, but we were convinced by the comments of many students and alumni that Florida Southern was worth the price.
The student body is over 60% female, 90% are under 25, and 40% are from out of state, including foreign students. We were pleased to see that Florida Southern offers courses online, an indication to us that this institution is progressive and has its students’ best interests at heart.
Florida Southern College offers over 50 programs of study, the most popular of which are: business (bachelor, master); health, especially nursing (bachelor, master); and bachelor programs in biology, psychology, social services, and visual/performing arts. If you think you will like a Florida location, a wide range of programs – some online – and can afford the somewhat pricey cost to attend then this 2,800-student college deserves your attention.
