Mount Aloysius College

Cresson, Pennsylvania

4-year, Regionally accredited

Affiliation: Roman Catholic

Degrees: Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's

With less than 2,000 students, all but about a few enrolled as undergraduates, Mount Aloysius College (“The Mount”) is located on a cozy campus in Cresson, Pennsylvania which is between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. Probably because of their great programs for the health professions, 35% of undergraduates and 45% of graduate students attend on a part time basis.  Also indicative of attractive programs in health care, over 20% of the students are 25 or older.  The Mount, affiliated with the Catholic Colleges of the Sisters of Mercy – there are 17 others – offers associate, bachelor and master degrees in classroom settings; only a few courses are available online, none of which are in graduate programs.

Although the U.S. Department of Education’s data, freely available online at their College Navigator website, indicates Mount Aloysius’s sticker price (for first year fulltime students) is around $37,000 their average net cost is just under $21,000 which qualified them for a close look by our researchers for a Best Value School designation.  The cost, which we feel is reasonable, especially for their programs in the health professions, plus the positive reviews students and alumni gave Mount Aloysius, eased the approval by our Selection Committee for a 2017 Best Value School Award.

Their popular degree programs in the health professions include an associate degree in surgical technology, bachelor and master degrees in radiology (technician), psychology, and bachelor’s in physical therapy plus a master degree program in mental health counseling.  Mount Aloysius College also has a “4 + 4” program leading to a doctor of dental medicine degree; it consists of a B.S. in biology from Mount Aloysius and then four years in the DMD program at a Florida college of medicine.  There are other degree programs, including criminal justice (bachelor’s and master’s), so we suggest those interested in a good, well-established college whose graduates are hired in their chosen field, spend some time investigating this Best Value smaller school.
