Cottey College, a women’s college located in rural Nevada, Missouri, is where they say “Learning has a female point of view.” The college offers a number of interesting amenities including suite-style living, a sophomore trip to a European city (paid for by the college), and more than 40 clubs, all led by women. Are these features important to prospective enrollees? We think they may be important to young women – 94% of Cottey students are under 25 years of age – who want a special college experience away from home. Two-thirds of Cottey’s 326 students (2015-16 school year) are from out of state and twelve percent are from other countries. It appears that young women find Cottey’s small college atmosphere comfortable and its amenities appealing.
Based on what they offer and provide, we expected to see Cottey College’s “sticker price” up around $50,000 but were pleasantly surprised to see it below $30,000. And we were happier to see that the average net cost for fulltime first year students at $16,300 - a very reasonable cost to attend and one of the reasons we selected Cottey as a 2017 Best Value School. The difference between sticker price and actual cost is accounted for by generous institutional grants and scholarships, which are provided to almost all students.
There are few, if any, online programs available. Evidently, Cottey wants its students to experience their unique brand of education, including the residential experience, which was another reason Cottey was designated a Best Value School. By researching student comments, we learned that Cottey is loved by a great percentage of their students and graduates. Their academic programs are varied, and most degrees awarded in 2015-16 were associate degrees in liberal arts (63 degrees conferred), with a few (8) in visual/performing arts. There are a variety of bachelor programs offered including business, psychology, and environmental studies, to name a few. We suggest those interested in a “Cottey Experience” (our words) peruse their website and catalog. We like Cottey College a lot; we think you will too.
"I cannot express how much this school changed my life. I feel like I got one of the greatest educations out there. The professors know you as individuals, and push you to be the best you can possibly be. Outside of the classroom, everyone is there to support you. You have a school of 350 maximum sisters, not just classmates. You can be who you want to be here. You don't have to struggle for the attention of your professors, your peers, anyone."
