Located in Kerrville, Texas, and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, Schreiner University is home to about 1,200 students, all but few of which are undergraduates. Schreiner is designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution as the university has more than 25% of its students of Hispanic background (actual percentage is about 34% according to the U.S. Department of Education College Navigator website). About 56% of Schreiner’s students are white, the rest are a mix of races/nationalities, making for a diverse student body and benefitting from each’s perspectives. Most (82%) of the university’s students are 24 or younger, 99% receive financial aid including grants and scholarships directly from the institution. Although sticker price is a steep $37,000 the generous aid packages reduce the cost to an actual net price of around $20,000 which is within our guidelines for a Best Value School designation.
The most popular program at Schreiner University is their BSN for nurses (62 degrees awarded in 2015-16), followed by bachelor and master degrees in business and in education. Also popular are bachelor degree programs in biology, exercise science, and psychology. We were impressed with the student/alumni comments; they obviously think highly of Schreiner University.
Kerrville, Texas is 65 miles from San Antonio and about 100 miles from Austin and Schreiner University’s campus is adjacent to the Guadalupe River, providing students with a comfortable, friendly small town atmosphere. The academic programs are designed to prepare students for meaningful, practical careers, and the university environment follows the Presbyterian tenet to honor the dignity and worth of all people. Some undergraduate courses are available online, and 40% of graduate students take selected courses online. We suggest you think about Schreiner University, especially if you’re from Texas and looking for a good, reasonably priced education.
