Trocaire College’s focus is on associate degree programs in the health and health technology professions, primarily their Registered Nurse program, though the college also offers degrees in hospitality, business and technology. Students from upper New York State – the Greater Buffalo area – make up the majority of the 1500 enrollees. Slightly more than half of the students are part time; over eighty percent are female. Predominantly white but racially mixed, about half the students are non-traditional students aged 25 or older.
Trocaire’s administration, staff and faculty take their roles seriously and vigorously work to provide guidance and assistance to students. Students comment that everyone is helpful and go out of their way to help students succeed. The RN program is rigorous – some complain that it is too hard – but we think training in the health care professions should maintain high requirement levels for students. One student’s comment echo our feelings: “I am in the RN program and it is stressful, but a good nurse can handle stress!”
Trocaire’s admission policy is centered around looking at the individual applicant as a person, not a bunch of test scores. Sometimes life gets in the way during high school and the years following, and individuals need special consideration. Most schools look beyond the individual and care more about who can pay top dollar tuition and fees. Trocaire is different…in a good way.
